SUMMARY:Build-a-Berm at the Wyckoff Urban Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us\, the MYA Group\, and Samuel's Food Gardens as we build a beautiful berm on our historic property.\n\n\nOn July 18th from 10:00 am -12:00 pm\, join the Wyckoff House Museum Farm staff\, the MYA Group\, and Samuel’s Food Gardens to build a beautiful berm around the perimeter of our property. \nA berm is an important feature in permaculture design\, created by layering natural materials like compost\, leaves\, mycelium\, and wood to form a mound that follows the natural contours of the park. \nIn addition to being a lovely design element\, berms have numerous ecological benefits. Berms slow stormwater runoff\, improve water retention\, improve soil quality\, and provide habitat for native vegetation and animals. This project will play an important role in enhancing the park’s long-term sustainability. \nNo prior experience is necessary\, just the desire to learn and willingness to get your hands in the soil. Tickets are not required to attend\, but it’s always helpful to RSVP so we can plan projects accordingly. \nTHINGS TO KNOW: \n\nThis event is family-friendly (ages 10+). We welcome individuals and families with kids ages 10 and over but children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of their stay.\nDress for the mess! Make sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy in and wear close toed shoes to protect your feet.\nCome Prepared: We will provide all the tools and protective gear for your projects but coming prepared with a hat\, long sleeved shirt\, sunscreen\, and bug spray is always a good idea.\nFacilities: Water fountain and public restrooms are available on-site. We recommend bringing snacks and a refillable water bottle.\nWeather: Build-a-Berm day is rain or shine. If extreme weather is expected\, we will update this page and contact those on the RSVP list to cancel.\n\n\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. \n
