Process Food Scraps with the Compost Crew

May 7, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 12:00 pm on Friday, repeating until June 11, 2021

Creating compost from food scraps, fallen leaves and other organic materials is an essential part of the operation of the Farm.  Stewardship of this urban farm requires some heavy lifting.  Join us every Friday from 12-2pm, rain or shine as we process the week’s food scraps.  The Wyckoff House Museum is a Public Food Scrap Drop-Off Site; that means we collect food scraps and other organic materials from our neighbors and turn that waste into useable compost!  We currently process 150+ pounds of compostable material each week.  That means less waste is being trucked to landfills.

Making compost involves mixing food scraps with organic materials such as wood chips or leaves and depositing the mixture into a system designed to facilitate the decomposition of those materials.  It can be dirty work but we will provide gloves, aprons, rubber boots and tools as needed.  There is a usable portable bathroom on-site and running water for hand washing.

Please be aware masks must be worn by all volunteers and staff while processing food scraps.

If you would like to participate please send an email to garden@wyckoffmuseum.org so we can properly anticipate your help

Your help with the compost supports a fruitful growing season on the farm.
