Festival Minokan: A Celebration of Haitian Culture

Haitian Vodou Song and Dance Celebration with Fanmi Asòtò

Festival Minokan invites all members of the community to participate in the rich traditions of Haitian culture and Haitian Vodou. Together we’ll honor our spirits and our ancestors, praise the Earth, and rejoice in song and dance. Join us as we explore the history of Vodou and the Haitian diaspora through artist’s talks, dance, song, and food. This year, Festival Minokan will be focusing on the sacred site of Seremoni Petwo (Ceremony Petro).

HISTORY, TALKS, WORKSHOPS

4 – 5:30 PM

  • History of Haiti independence and Seremoni Petwo with Markus Schwartz
  • Artist Talk on the making and meaning of “Ayiti Tonma: Genesis,” a quilt piece by Brooklyn-based fiber artist Mahalia Stines
  • Instrument Demos with Markus Schwartz and Fanfan Jean-Guy Rene
  • Song Workshop with Yatande Boko, Sirene Dantor Rene & Carline Ruiz
  • Dance Workshop Nadia Dieudonne and Veroneque Ignace

SEREMONI PETWO / PETRO CEREMONY

6 – 8 PM

  • Performance and Presentation by Fanmi Asòtò
  • Petwo gathering and ceremony around the altar and fire

Festival Minokan is free to participate and all ages are welcome. Traditional food, drink, and crafts will be available for purchase.

HEALTH & SAFETY

  • We respectfully ask that all visitors (over the age of 2 years) adhere to mask wearing and social distancing requirements while visiting the park and museum. Following these protocols will also help protect those who are unvaccinated, including families who visit with young children.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the park and event. We will have extra masks if you do not bring your own.
  • We recommend using the restroom before your arrival. There are two port-o-sans on the property.

Festival Minokan at the Wyckoff House Museum is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; and supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
