POSTPONED- Creative Homesteading: Natural Dyeing with Black Walnuts

April 4, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Update as of March 13, 2020: This event is currently postponed. Please check here on our website for the latest updates and revised open hours as we work to reschedule. Thank you for your understanding!

Learn how to create natural dyes from materials found in your own backyard! We will explore the basics of creating a sustainably sourced dye bath from Black Walnuts.

Know before you attend:

  • Black walnuts produce a dark brown dye so participants are encouraged to dress for the mess during this hands-on activity.
  • The demonstration is free to attend. If you’d like to bring a small, lightweight article of clothing in a natural material (cotton, linen or silk) you may do so, limit one item per person. No heavyweight items like sweatshirts or denim.
  • Cotton handkerchief sets for dyeing will be available for purchase. Supplies are limited.
  • Workshop is for participants ages 13+

This workshop is presented in conjunction with Smithsonian Museum Day 2020: Earth Optimism. Make sure to register for a free tour of our historic house before the workshop!
